Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to help you get the most out of MultiDesk.

What is MultiDesk?

MultiDesk is a lightweight workspace organizer for Windows. It lets you create multiple desktop-like workspaces, each with its own shortcuts and optional wallpaper, and switch between them instantly using a floating bar.

Is MultiDesk the same as Windows Virtual Desktops?

MultiDesk is more than Windows Virtual Desktops because it organizes your workflow at the desktop content level, not just at the window level. While Windows Virtual Desktops mainly separate open windows, MultiDesk adds a dedicated layer for:

  • Workspace-specific shortcuts (.lnk): Different tools for each project.
  • Optional wallpapers: Instant visual context switching.
  • Saved icon layouts: Remembered position per workspace.
  • Fast switching: A persistent, floating numbered bar for one-click access.
What file types are supported?

MultiDesk displays Windows shortcut files (.lnk). Other file types are currently ignored to keep your workspace clean and efficient.

Where are my workspaces stored?

Workspaces are stored locally on your machine at:
%LocalAppData%\MultiDesk\Workspaces\
Each workspace has its own items folder and configuration data.

Can I move or copy shortcuts between workspaces?

Yes! Simply right-click an icon and use the Move to... or Copy to... context menu options to manage your shortcuts across different workspaces.

What happens when I delete a shortcut?

Safety first: when you delete a shortcut from MultiDesk, the .lnk file is sent to the Windows Recycle Bin, not permanently deleted. You can restore it anytime if needed.

Does MultiDesk support multi-monitor setups?

MultiDesk currently runs as a single workspace surface. If you use multiple monitors, it will display its workspace window on one monitor at a time, while the floating switcher bar remains available for navigation. Full multi-monitor expansion is a prioritized feature for a future Pro update.

Does MultiDesk start automatically with Windows?

Yes, there is a "Start with Windows" option in the settings. Note that on some Microsoft Store versions, this behavior is managed by Windows App execution policies.

Why does MultiDesk use the system tray to reopen or exit the app?

MultiDesk is designed to work like a persistent workspace layer—especially in full screen mode and when "Start with Windows" is enabled. For this reason, MultiDesk is meant to stay running in the background and be quickly shown/hidden without interrupting your workflow.

  • If you click Hide, MultiDesk hides its windows but continues running.
  • To show it again (after hiding) or to exit completely, use the system tray icon.

This “tray-first” behavior prevents accidental exits and keeps your workspaces instantly available whenever you need them.

Can I use MultiDesk in full screen?

Yes. MultiDesk offers a dedicated full-screen mode that respects the Windows work area, ensuring your Taskbar remains accessible while you enjoy a focused environment.

How do I upgrade to Pro?

Inside the app, go to Settings → License and click Buy Pro. The license is linked to your Microsoft Account for easy management across your devices.

Trial still showing after purchase?

First, ensure you are signed into the Microsoft Store with the purchasing account. Then try: 1) Restarting MultiDesk, 2) Clicking Restore purchases in the License settings. If issues persist, a Windows restart usually triggers the Store's license refresh.
